Nocturne Paintings

Brock_Karen_EveningWalkonaStarlessNight.jpeg

'My current work includes night landscapes. These works extend my fascination with colour and composition. The repeated motif of the night sky facilitates my exploration of colour value. Painted from a minimal palette, large shapes of low key colour merge together where details apparent in daylight blur into dark shadows. Part of my practice is to begin a painting from observation, sometimes in darkness with a small headlamp, placing me in an uncomfortable mindset, relying heavily on memory of place.  I find within this space a freedom for creativity where I'm able to invent part of the composition.

I paint imagery from my neighbourhood and surroundings and aim to depict a nostalgic and atmospheric scene that the viewer will feel familiar with. Familiar suburban motifs are present in many of my paintings, telegraph poles and wires, cars parked on kerbless streets, letter boxes, street signs, trees, garbage bins.
